My Mission

This page is named My Mission but it’s really about you.  I developed this website to share my experience and passion for Artificial Intelligence with you, and to help my clients develop better (and more successful) software solutions.  I achieve this through my consulting, speaking, workshops, training, and blog posts.

I don’t have to tell you that searching the internet for information about AI can be an overwhelming experience.  I’ve been actively involved in AI since the 1990s, and I’m still learning new things.  I consider myself to be an expert practitioner with tons of hands-on experience, but I continually devote much of my free time to learning everything I can about advances in the field, new tools, the latest frameworks and offerings, and what’s working in the real world.

So let’s talk about the hype for a minute.  If you’ve been in the field for more than a few years, you know that the current frenzy about AI is not new.  The good news is that this time around, a lot of the excitement is justified.  Some businesses are building meaningful AI applications that improve their customer service, streamline their operations, and reduce their operating costs.  But for every business that succeeds, several others never make it past the prototype stage.

The reality is that Artificial Intelligence is not magic; it’s math.  In simple terms, AI is a category of software engineering that’s based on complex branches of mathematics.  Building and deploying an AI application has all of the complexity of any other software project, with several additional challenges.

That’s where I fit in.  As a professional scientist and experienced AI practitioner, my mission is to provide clarity.  I want to serve as an experienced and trusted guide to help you separate the reality from the hype.  My goal is to consult, speak, train, and write meaningful, informative blog posts that will help you make sense of it all (and possibly entertain you along the way).

What I want from you in return is your feedback, either by rating the posts or emailing me to tell me what you like (or dislike or disagree with) and your questions/suggestions for other topics.  I promise to read every email and respond directly or through a future blog post.

By the way, I’m also writing a book about AI for business that should be ready for publication by December 2024.  This isn’t a book about killer robots or sentient computers that take over the world.  This book will be for businesses that want to benefit from AI and are looking for a clear roadmap that they can follow.  It will also have advice for anyone looking to prepare for a career in AI.  I’ll share ideas from the book in my blog posts from time to time, and I welcome your thoughts and input (at least until the final draft is sent off to my editors).
